Databases Management

Last Wednesday in our Organization and culture class we had the opportunity to learn more about the databases uses, if they were for free, in demonstration or if they needed a subscription.

In the different databases that exists are possible to find different kind of publications such as magazines, online books, news papers publications, web sites and even choose academic resources depending the type of information you are looking for. EAFIT University located in Medellín, Colombia has subscription with very helpful databases classified by different knowledge fields, administration and business, human sciences, engineering and technology among others. Is possible to have access from the library of the university if they are not for massive use (because they control the amount of people that use them for investigations reasons) or from any place just by giving the user name and password.
Just for practical learning we visited some administration and business databases, some of them are Legiscomex (shows colombian exports and imports by product, markets), EIU viewswire (a branch of The Economist, is an independent database and keeps updated), EBSCO and ProQuest (gives a lot of possibilities to find the info by date, at the same time allows filtration to find exactly what you have in mind), Springerlink (more than 1.000 magazines in subscription by internal access), Emerald (approximately 100 magazines about Administration issues, mostly european publications), the last two databases are new for the University.
Exists the service between national universities in order to get the information required, just by getting access to "celsius" a platform where students can register the subject looked for and then people from the university's library get in contact in order to find some publications.

Is notorious the increase of databases uses, long time ago the most practical tool or research implements were the books, that obligated you to go to the library and even learn how to look for them. Now days, those kind of process are becoming less practiced, is easier for us to have information written one or two minutes ago and follow the development of some scientific investigations, I'm not against this. I'm actually one of those who are always watching what is new and consulting by internet almost every assignment given in class, but I'm also the one that loves the smell of old books, and appreciate more the exercise by reading physically the book, or magazine. The point we are right now is not bad, is great to have all the information just by some clicks, or credit cards payments; for those reasons all writers, investigators, scientifics, etc. have to be aware of what others write and update their theories or thoughts in order to have the community in the same level as everything is happening, meanwhile the books of the nearest library are getting obsolete.
